METRO President Welcome Letter

 Dear Members,

I hope this letter finds you all in good health and enjoying the early fall weather. With the turn of the season, comes the start of a new METRO year. It is an honor to be writing to you as the incoming president. Our association has a remarkable history and has included many giants in our field. The existence of a local professional association that is able to create a true community of professionals, where ideas are shared, expertise disseminated, and collaborative relationships developed, is something truly remarkable and a benefit to us all.

The Board has put together a terrific line up of speakers for this year. We are starting our year on 10/14 with David Nadler who will be speaking on his experiences working with corporate boards and senior leaders. On 11/9, we have the opportunity on to hear from Jim Outtz on developments in the employment discrimination litigation domain, an important topic and one in which Jim is recognized as the expert. After the New Year, we will have the pleasure of hearing from Brian Welle on people analytics at Google. This spring we will be joined by Manny London speaking on performance management. Michael Bazigos will be sharing his work on talent management at IBM. Additional speakers will be announced very soon. As always we will have our Career Day in April. The schedule of our meetings will be posted shortly on the METRO website (http://metroapppsych.com/). All of our meetings this year will be held at NYU’s Wasserman Career Center on 13th Street between 3rd and 4th Avenues.

In addition to our all-star line-up of speakers, we have a couple other developments to share with you. Because of the cost saving measures that the Board has implemented over the past couple of years and the generosity of our sponsors, there will be no increase in the dues for this year. It will be the third year in a row that we have been able to hold stable the cost of membership in METRO. This year we will be implementing the opportunity to earn CE credits for attending METRO meeting. METRO has arranged with APR Testing Services to provide these CE credits to our members. We would like to thank METRO member Joel Wiessen from APR Testing Services for making this possible. We will be distributing more information in the coming weeks.

In my four years on the Board I’ve had the honor to work with some terrific people and leaders: LeAnne Bennett, Warren Klein, Erika D’Egidio, and our departing President Dan Fisher. Each of these individuals has made a valuable contribution to METRO and enriched our community. As the incoming President I am in the enviable position of having a tremendous Board to work with. This year’s Vice-President is Pete Rutigliano. Our new Treasurer is Christine Schrader Fernandez, and our new Secretary is Michel Buffet. We are assisted by the contributions of many others, including David Mahl and Eran Arbel, who produce our Newsletter; Chris Rotolo, who continues to devote his time and talents to assisting METRO’s online presence; and Pat Marshall, who handles our job board. A very special thanks goes out to Johanna Seppalainen who has taken care of all of the arrangements for the refreshments and food at our meetings. I want to also acknowledge the invaluable help provided by Erica Rivera, Terri Shapiro, and our meeting volunteers and newsletter writers Ashley Busing, Naomi Rodolitz, and John Capman, without whom our events would be thrown into chaos. Lastly, we would like to thanks Scott Eggebeen and Alan Watson who have made the meeting space available to METRO and managed the scheduling of our meetings.

I hope to see all of you at our season kickoff meeting on October 14th at NYU’s Wasserman Career Center. We are going to start this meeting 15 minutes early in order to take care of some housekeeping chores and to honor our outgoing President, so please come early to mingle and enjoy the refreshments so that we can formally start at 6:15pm.

If you are looking to become more involved with METRO, please approach any Board member and talk about how you would like to contribute to our community.
Looking forward to a great year!
Charles Scherbaum
