Leaders today face unprecedented changes and uncertainty alongside expectations to support worker wellbeing in our diverse and divided society. Yet, leader development and training often ignore the inherent emotional labor of the job and how leaders can support their people - and themselves - in these new conditions. Drawing on her recent book on this topic, emotional labor expert Dr. Grandey will discuss evidence-based strategies for leaders to thrive in the complex emotional landscape at work, and to foster healthy and productive work environments in the 21st century.

Speaker Bio
Dr. Alicia Grandey is a distinguished Liberal Arts Professor of Psychology in the industrial-organizational program at Pennsylvania State University. Over the past 25 years, Dr. Grandey developed scientific expertise for the tradeoffs of worker health and performance, specifically addressing the challenges of emotional labor and work mistreatment. Her 75+ publications have received best paper awards, NSF grant funding, and over 37,000 citations, which puts her in the top 1% of organizational scientists. She shares her research broadly through media such as Harvard Business Review, The New Yorker, WorkLife with Adam Grant, The Conversation, and NPR. She recently co-authored the 2025 book Emotionally Charged: How to Lead in the New World of Work (Oxford) to share this expertise with leaders and those they lead.
